Jean awoke with a start, kicking the sheets away, already standing upright before processing any of it. Pain shot up her calf with each step as she unsteadily fumbled for the light. Stupid nightmares, she sighed heavily to herself as the light clicked on. A flurry of movement, as though a book had fallen from the bed, accompanied the light.
With the light on, the scene was even more surreal. Her calf throbbed sympathetically with the trail of shuffled, smeared blood from the bed to the lamp. Am I dreaming still? Jane slowly glanced down at her aching leg to see – and suddenly now feel fully – the slinging punctures of the skin, seeping blood slowly down her ankles and onto the carpet.
The sound of a rustling – turning pages perhaps? – caught her attention as she backed slowly towards the bathroom, now concerned an animal had gotten in. “Charlie?” she asked hopefully as her back met the bathroom door. The purred response came from the top of the television set as Charlie perched, staring wide-eyed at the bed.
A chill from the bathroom door opening froze her to her core, reminding her yet again she was covered in sweat and blood with no good explanation. The nightmare was only beginning, however. Jean kept her eyes locked under the bed as she slipped into the bathroom, the brighter light revealing scratch-like wounds up her calf.
“What did you do Charlie?” she sighed, looking up to blame him for the injuries. Charlie still sat motionless, watching, as the confused Jean registered the crumpled papers autonomously crinkling and reaching towards the bathroom door towards her. A thought dawned – the wounds were paper cuts.
Her fictions had turned on her.
